Increase breast milk production with Chinese herbal medicine Zengru Gao

A multi-center randomized controlled trial has shown the efficacy of a Chinese herbal medicine as a natural galactagogue. Zengru Gao, a herbal complex derived from eight different plant genera, has long been prescribed by natural healers as a way for lactating mothers to increase their breast milk production. However, this has not been formally validated until now. The results of this compelling study have been published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

  • For the study, 588 mothers were observed.
  • Half were assigned to the treatment group and the other half were part of the control group.
  • The treatment group received 30 g of the herbal complex daily, three times a day.
  • Breast milk production was analyzed at day one, three, and seven following birth.
  • Significant differences were found at days three and seven, with breastfeeding mothers reporting an increased amount of milk being produced.
  • The effect was particularly notable after one week of consistent intake of Zengru Gao.

Some mothers from the treatment group did experience some adverse effects; although the researchers say that these were mild and resolved themselves after a few days. It was concluded that Zengru Gao may be considered as a potential candidate for increasing breast milk production postpartum.
