Scientists analyze the antioxidant potential of the Fagonia olivieri (medicinal herb)

Researchers have discovered that Fagonia olivieri can be used to treat acetaminophen-induced liver damage, possibly because of its antioxidant potential. This study, which was published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, used in vitro and in vivo studies to evaluate the antioxidant content of the crude methanol extract of the whole plant of F. olivieri.

  • F. olivieri is a commonly used folklore medicine for treating diabetes, cancer, fever, and other stress related disorders.
  • Total phenolic and flavonoid content and in vitro antioxidant abilities were evaluated for crude methanol extract of whole plant F. olivieri as well as its derived fractions. These fractions includes n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and aqueous.
  • In vivo studies of the antioxidant activity of F. olivieri methanol extract were done using male Sprague-Dawley (Ratus novergicus) rats as models. Acetaminophen was used to induce hepatotoxicity in the rats.
  • Methanol F. olivieri extract and the other derived fractions were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to determine the presence of polyphenolics.

Based on the results of the study, the researchers were able to conclude that F. olivieri contains large amounts of phenolic and flavonoid compounds, which have been associated to antioxidant activity. This provides the scientific rationale behind the use of Fagonia olivieri as traditional medicine.
