Your stomach can hurt because of various underlying conditions. The major causes of abdominal cramps may include:

  • Acid reflux
  • Constipation
  • Flatulence
  • Food poisoning
  • Gastric ulcers
  • Indigestion
  • Infrequent bowels
  • Menstrual pain
  • Nausea
  • Pregnancy
  • An upset stomach

If you don’t want to take over-the-counter (OTC) medication, which may have negative side effects, try some of these natural remedies for a stomachache.

Aniseed tea

Tea made from aniseed, which comes from an herb called anise (Pimpinella anisum), can ease stomachaches and cramps. The tea can also cure stomachaches caused by bloating, flatulence, and indigestion. Aniseed tea can stimulate a healthy appetite, and its diuretic nature can flush blocked urine and relieve stomach cramp.

To brew aniseed tea, add less than half a teaspoon of aniseed powder to one cup of boiling water. Let the tea steep for five minutes, then strain before drinking. Consume aniseed tea twice daily to ease stomach pain.

Calendula tea

Calendula essential oil has quercetin and flavonoids that can promote blood flow and address irregular menstruation. Calendula tea is an effective home remedy for period cramps because it also has powerful analgesic properties.

Make the tea by adding two grams of dried calendula flowers to 200 milliliters (ml) of water. Boil the mixture, then let it steep. Strain the liquid before drinking. Consume the tea twice a day if you have irregular periods.

Fenugreek tea

Fenugreek tea can help ease cramps and stomach pain involving food poisoning, indigestion, and peptic ulcer. The tea coats the inflamed intestinal walls with mucus, and this hastens the healing process.

To make the tea, put two cups of water in a pot. Add a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds to the water, then boil the mixture. Strain the liquid, then add a teaspoon of honey. Drink the tea twice daily to ease stomach cramps.

Fresh fruit juice

Fresh fruit juice is full of nutrients and it can cure heartburn, cleanse the intestines (by promoting regular bowel movement), eliminate toxins, improve digestion, and soothe the intestinal lining.

Below are some suggestions for fruit juice combinations that you can try if you have a stomachache. To prepare these juices, chop the fruit and/or vegetables, add water, then blend well until the juice is ready. Don’t add any sugar to the juice.

  • Aloe vera, orange, and spinach
  • Apple, cucumber, and lettuce
  • Broccoli and papaya
  • Celery and red grape
  • Celery, ginger, and pear
  • Cucumber, pineapple, and Swiss chard
  • Lettuce and orange
  • Mint and pineapple

Ginger tea

Ginger has biochemical compounds called gingerol and shogaol that can help treat abdominal cramps and colic. It can also ease nausea. Drink one cup of warm ginger tea to treat a stomachache.

To make ginger tea, crush ginger root into tiny pieces and add them to a bowl of water. Boil the mixture for ten to fifteen minutes. Strain the mixture then add one tablespoon each of honey and lemon juice. (Related: Ginger root and coconut water: Smart home remedies for an upset stomach.)

Warm apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) can treat abdominal cramps, flatulence, and indigestion. ACV can also address heartburn and an upset stomach.

For this remedy, you need to combine two tablespoons of ACV and two cups of warm water. Add a pinch of baking soda to the mixture, then stir to dissolve. You can sweeten the mixture with a teaspoon of honey. Drink the remedy immediately.

Yoga to relieve stomach cramps

Aside from the remedies listed above, you can try practicing yoga to ease your stomach pain. Do these floor-based yoga postures for around 10 to 20 minutes if you have a stomachache.

  • Apasana pose – This pose can ease bloating and flatulence. Bring your knees towards your chest then wrap your arms around your knees. Breathe steadily and hold the pose for 30 seconds. Repeat the pose for two to three minutes.
  • Bridge pose – This pose can cure bloating and indigestion. The bridge pose can also improve blood circulation and boost physical energy. Lie on your back. Bend your knees then keep them slightly apart while your feet are planted firmly on the ground. Lift your torso and hold the pose for 15 to 20 seconds as you breathe steadily. Repeat the pose for 30 to 34 minutes until the pain subsides.
